Dr. Taimi Olsen is the director of the Tenn TLC, where she strives carry forward the Center’s core values of co-creation of learning, reflective practice (reflecting in action), and scholarship of teaching and learning (action research). She previously served as the Associate Director and is looking forward to the next stage in the Center’s development: bringing faculty to faculty to share their stories of the excellent teaching done at UTK.
Olsen earned her bachelor’s degree in English at Guilford College, NC, her master’s in English at UNC-Chapel Hill, and she earned her doctorate in American and Twentieth Century Literature at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1997. She published Transcending Space: Architectural Places in works by Henry David Thoreau, E. E. Cummings and John Barth, Bucknell UP, 2000, and a chapter on spatial linquistics in Words Into Pictures: E. E. Cummings’ Art Across Borders, 2007 as well as a variety of articles on literary and teaching topics.
Before joining UT, she was a full professor of English at Tusculum College in East Tennessee, where she served at various times as English department chair, director of the Arts and Sciences Division, and Competency Director (a college-wide teaching and assessment position). She also established the college’s teaching and learning faculty circles on the Carnegie Mellon model. At UTK, she is co-lead for our Summer Teaching Institute. All of the faculty development activities at the Tenn TLC are carefully researched and planned in order to bring best practices and innovative methods to UTK faculty, lecturers, and GTAs.
Her philosophy is that teaching students is exceptionally satisfying work–and that effective changes in our pedagogies can result in visible changes in student learning success.
