Our staff works throughout the year to bring the best resources and information to aid new faculty in beginning the teaching portion of their careers. Last fall, over 70 new faculty participated in our intensive, interactive sessions in teaching and learning at UTK. They gained tools and knowledge to take to their classrooms and lecture halls and online courses–and they developed a supportive network for their first year.
This year, we offer a revised, two-day program with sessions on the UTK student (the new “Gen Z”) and UTK teaching policies and teaching practices. We will introduce our new learning management system with the help of OIT, address accessibility with our Office of Disability Services, and learn about UTK’s new experiential learning program with our “Experience Learning” director. (For a preview, see a NFTI Syllabus 2016 draft.)
In our interactive sessions, you will meet and talk with previous attendees about their teaching and research, meet various administrators to hear their vision for teaching at UTK, talk in small groups with disciplinary faculty, and enjoy a student panel discussion.
Our optional third day will give you time to work on a course that you will be teaching, through facilitated “working time,” group and individual consultation, and our highly rated “micro-teaching” session, in which you video-tape and we discuss a short, 5 min teaching segment.
Previous attendees report that the Institute was “a huge help to me as I made the transition to UT and the Knoxville area.”
If you are already a part of the Big Orange family, be sure to join us in welcoming new faculty to our campus this fall.
